What is Wichita NewsBrief?

Wichita's Weekdaily E-News, Opinion,
& Online Marketplace

Wichita NewsBrief is best described as a printed version of conversation you might have at the coffee pot in the morning at the office. You might say, “hey, did you see (whatever) on the news yesterday?” And have the other person say “Yeah”, then share their thought about it, and that’s where you leave off. In just a couple of minutes, you’ve talked about what’s going on, maybe shared a thought or two about it, and you go on about your day.

That’s what Wichita NewsBrief does. We are not a source for in-depth news, but just enough to know what’s happening, and unlike a newspaper or a television newscast that just tells you the news, NewsBrief gives you the chance to respond to what you have read almost immediately.

We fill a very unique niche in local media. Wichita NewsBrief is something you can read first thing in the morning as you check your email, spend ten or fifteen minutes with it, and feel like you are caught up with what’s going on.

You can bookmark and read the newsletter from the website each day, but 99% of readers add their email address to the subscriber list so that its in their email box every morning. Just click on “Email Delivery” to add your name to our list!

Like any publication, advertisers are what keep us going. Please note the two options at the left to explain advertising opportunities for the newsletter itself, and our online marketplace.

 News Summary Section

The news summary section usually has 8-10 stories every day. It can be more or less depending on what’s out there of note. Stories are typically four or five sentences in length; just enough for you to know what’s going on. Your humble editor scours the local newscasts each evening to bring you the noteworthy items that you’ll likely be talking about at the office the next morning. While it has a local news basis, I also include things I find on the internet, or hear on the radio; just whatever strikes my attention. And, I occasionally inject my own opinion into the story, not because I’m looking to be controversial, but because I’m not just a talking head delivering the news to you. I think I inject thoughts and reactions that most people would have anyway. If that generates some opposite opinions, then all the better. I never ask that you agree with me, but that if you can offer a different perspective, to please share it in the opinion section. It’s that “dialogue” nature of the newsletter that also makes it unique in the local media.

And, you’ll also find the three day weather forecast, a current conditions window, the pun of the day, and a quote of the day, just to give you something to think about.

Opinion Section

The opinion section is made up three parts.

THE RANTS -- Probably as much the reason people read Wichita NewsBrief as the actual news itself. Comments are limited to 100 words or less. Because they are shorter in length, we often run a dozen or so each day, and like all opinions, they can be completely off the mark or make a point that you will be sharing with others when the topic comes up. It’s your best chance for your opinion to be heard!

MY TWO CENTS – Sometimes, your opinion simply cannot be expressed in a few sentences. We run longer comments here of between 100 and 250 words. We only run up to three per day, so in order to see the light of day it needs to be one of the three better ones of the submissions we have.

A PIECE OF MY MIND – Our longest opinion format between 250-500 words. We run just one per day, and it tends to get held to a higher level of scrutiny before it gets printed.

Business Spotlight Section

Every day, we all do business with people or establishments that we never give a lot of thought as to why. This segment introduces you to business owners who want to explain why you should consider choosing them in the future. And, you'll want to!

Daily Feature Section

It’s a potpourri of items that will change daily. However, Mondays are generally when you will see “Burger Quest”, a review of local hamburger joints, their burgers, fries, and onion rings. That gives you the whole work week to get out and try the place yourself and see if you agree with your humble editor’s review or not.

Fridays are when you will typically see movie reviews. Like all things in Wichita NewsBrief, what gets reviewed has as much to do with the whim of what the editor is seeing as anything. So, it could be a movie that debuted the previous week, something that is second-run, or a video that made it to stores that he hasn’t yet reviewed as a movie. Sometimes those appear on Thursdays if there is more than one movie to review.

As the newsletter grows, you’ll see contributions from guest columnists, and from professionals with news on their industry.
